The Frederick County School Board will hold a public hearing during its meeting at 7 p.m. on December 17 in the James Wood Middle School Library on how to appropriately honor and memorialize those buried on the site where the replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School is being built. The 10 unknown and abandoned gravesites discovered on the school site are believed to have been part of the Reed family cemetery.

Frederick County Public Schools Locates Graves on Site of Replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School

Several graves believed to be part of the Reed family cemetery have been discovered on the site where the replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School is being built. In an effort to be respectful and complete its due diligence, the school divison is working with the appropriate agencies in considering its options. Based on what is known at this time, the discovery will not impact plans to construct the school or delay the school's opening in August 2021.

School Board Participates in Annual Fall Training Session

During its annual Fall Training Session on October 25, the school board discussed the division's strategic plan Inspire 2025, projected enrollment growth, the FY21 budget and revisions to the Capital Improvements Plan (CIP). The greatest CIP needs noted included construction of a fourth high school, renovation/addition at Armel Elementary School and the renovation of James Wood High School.

On-Time Graduation Rate Exceeds State Average

Frederick County Public Schools’ on-time graduation rate for the Class of 2019 was 92.8 percent compared to Virginia’s rate of 91.5percent. In addition to exceeding the state’s on-time graduation rate, the school division’s 3.2 percent dropout rate for the Class of 2019 was lower than the state’s rate of 5.6 percent.
