The Frederick County School Board will hold a public hearing during its meeting at 7 p.m. on December 17 in the James Wood Middle School Library on how to appropriately honor and memorialize those buried on the site where the replacement Robert E. Aylor Middle School is being built. The 10 unknown and abandoned gravesites discovered on the school site are believed to have been part of the Reed family cemetery.

In an effort to be respectful and complete its due diligence, the school divison is working with the appropriate agencies in considering its options. Based on what is known at this time, the discovery will not impact plans to construct the school or delay the school's opening in August 2021.

The Association of School Business Officials International has recognized Frederick County Public Schools with a Meritorious Budget Award. In addition, the Chesapeake Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association has presented the school division with several awards as part of its 2019 Communications Contest.

VACORP has recognized Frederick County Public Schools with a 2019 Excellence in Risk Management Award. Just six school divisions statewide received the honor.

For the ninth consecutive year, the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has recognized Frederick County Public Schools as a Platinum Level Green School Division. The distinction was earned as part of the VSBA's Green Schools Challenge.

The School Board adopted its 2020-21 Strategic Plan and Budget Priorities on November 6. The priorities will help guide the Board's work over the upcoming year and assist the Superintendent as he prepares his proposed budget for FY21.

The top priority on the 2021-2025 Capital Improvements Plan adopted by the School Board on November 6 is construction of the fourth high school.

During its annual Fall Training Session on October 25, the school board discussed the division's strategic plan Inspire 2025, projected enrollment growth, the FY21 budget and revisions to the Capital Improvements Plan (CIP). The greatest CIP needs noted included construction of a fourth high school, renovation/addition at Armel Elementary School and the renovation of James Wood High School.

Astronaut Douglas Wheelock visited Redbud Run Elementary School recently to share his story and encourage students to pursue their dreams.

Evendale Elementary School fifth grade student Tiffany Yau was recently recognized by Virginia’s Secretary of Education for placing second in the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign Student Visual Art Contest.

Frederick County Public Schools’ on-time graduation rate for the Class of 2019 was 92.8 percent compared to Virginia’s rate of 91.5percent. In addition to exceeding the state’s on-time graduation rate, the school division’s 3.2 percent dropout rate for the Class of 2019 was lower than the state’s rate of 5.6 percent.

Each of Frederick County’s public schools has achieved the highest level of accreditation for 2019-20. All 18 schools have been designated as Accredited based on the Virginia Board of Education’s school accountability system.

The overall mean score of Frederick County Public Schools' 2019 graduates who took the SAT exceeded the national mean score of public high school seniors. Frederick County’s mean score of 1105 was 66 points higher than the national mean score for public schools.
